In the wake of the prevalence of egoism among contemporary "rights-conscious" Americans who have tagged individual freedom and rights as entitled by their Creator,. Dionne Jr. in his article, "A Call for National Service", contends that national service is the obligation of every single American. He effectively builds his argument by logically demonstrating tactical reasoning and persuasive devices and adeptly utilizing sarcastic diction to plead with the audience to take his side.
By referencing to authoritative source, E. J. Donnie Jr. in the first place builds a solid ground for his call for national service. Through quotation from one of the Founding Document, the Declaration of Independence, at the beginning of his argument, the uthor sets forth that the prerequisite of “our rights”, that is “all men are created equal”, is the fulfillment of our obligation to “pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor”. It convinces the reader by logic reasoning that all the citizens should contribute to national service. Furthermore, reference to the founding document and the Founder touches the reader’s heartstring, arouses their national pride, and it helps to portray the national service deferential and compelling to the audience ready to dedicate them to the service.
Building upon the momentum generated from his reference to “Declaration of Independence”, the author continues successfully building the case for the call of services by quotation from a national figure. After paragraph seven, Donnie repeatedly quotes Stanley McChrystal’s speech, who used to be . Army Four-Star general, the former com mander of Iraq and Afghanistan War, Person of theYear in Time. Thus, the reader can hardly doubt the duty of “citizenship”, the service programs. Moreover, after the direct quotation of such a veteran retired from the battle field of Iraq and Afghanistan, the author asserts that “we owe an enormous debt to those who have done tour after tour” in these two countries, appealing to the audience guilt toward the sacrifice of the soldiers and swaying them to his central claim that national service should be called for.
Apart from rational reasoning and strong support of quotations, rhetoric seals the deal in Donnie’s persuasion. Throughout the whole argument, he uses personal pronoun “we” to show the current circumstance among American citizens, endearing to the audience by counting himself in the same group with them. In paragraph four, the utilization of this ordinary pronoun places the cherry on the top of his argument. He contrasts the common “we” with the “we” containing “every single American” and emphasizes the former with quotation marks. This punctuation bearing irony aids in evincing the distance between the reader’s behaviors and the idea of founding documents and also alarming them their “unavoidable responsibility”.
Writing as a creation to his disappointment that national service reserves to be the constant mission of organizations rather than citizen themselves, . Dionne Jr. argues that the service is a part of citizenship. He builds this claim by appealing to logos, influential quotations and skillful sarcasm.

When people move to another country, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country. Others prefer to keep their own customs. Compare these two choices. Which one do you prefer? Support your answer with specific details.
Nowadays it is quite common for people to immigrate to ther countries. When they move, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country while others prefer to keep their own. If I were forced to agree with one of the two positions, my choice would be the former.
To illustrate my point, let us first take a look on why some people dislike the idea of following the customs of the new country. For one thing, these people are so accustomed to their own culture, religion and customs, and it is very hard for them to accept the new cultures. For instance, people from a Islamic country may find a lot of customs in western countries offensive.
Although I agree that some customs are hard to change, I insist that the advantages of adapting to a new culture are apparently seen. In the first place, by following the customs of the new country, you can learn about the country and understand the people more easily and become a real member of the country. People who stick to their way of life may sometimes feel lonely and isolated. To share the same custom means that having more things in common, and it can pull
people together. Furthermore, you have to adapt to some customs of the new country, if they are written into the law. As a result, it is much more sensible to do as the Roman do.
In conclusion,I believe that the advantages of following the customs of the new country is obvious because you can easily learn about the country and be a real member of it. What is more, you can live more easily in a foreign country.
Some people prefer to spend most of their time alone. Others like to be with friends most of the time. Do you prefer to spend your time alone or with friends? Use specific reasons to support your answer.
If I had to choose between spending time alone or spending time with my friends, I'd rather be alone. I need this time alone to "recharge my batteries," to re-energize my mind and spirit. Being with friends can be fun and can help you get through the rough spots in life, but it's the time alone, I think, that forms you as a person.
When I'm alone, I have time to think about my goals and to develop a strategy to reach them. Of course, lean think about these things when I'm with others, but it's harder to concentrate in a crowd. Being alone gives me the quiet time to really think about my life and what I want to do with it.
Being by myself is also a good way to listen to the silence and relax completely. When I'm alone I can practice meditation and lower my stress level. That's a very good way to sharpen my powers of concentration. Too much time with friends means filling my mind with a lot of chitchat. That's enjoyable for a moment, but can dull my concentration.
Being with other people can also distort my view of things. It's easy sometimes to become too worried about what other people think of me, or what other people have that I don't. When I'm alone I have time to step back. I can see the real value of things, without being influenced by the opinions of my friends.
It's natural to want to be with other people, but I find the time I spend alone is more valuable to me in the long run.
Some people prefer to spend time with one or two close friends. Others choose to spend time with a large number of friends. Compare the advantages of each choice. Which of these two ways of spending time do you prefer? Use specific reasons to support your answer.
We all need to have friends, and I think the more friends we have the better. Friendship helps us learn how to trust others, what to expect from others, and how to profit from experiences. I want to have a lot of friends around me sol can learn more about myself from different people.
I want to have people around me that I trust and that I can depend on. We all need friends, both in times of trouble and in times of happiness. If I only have a few, friends, it impossible that they might not be available if I need them. If I have a lot of friends, it is more likely that they will be able to share my troubles or my good fortune.
I want to have people around me that surprise me. If I have just one or two friends, I know what to expect from them. I know how they will react. If I have a lot of friends around me, I will always be surprised. Each will have a different way of reacting to a situation. Observing this reaction and responding to it will teach me how to deal with strangers whom I might meet.
I want to have people around me that can teach me something about life. If I only have a couple of friends, I will know everything about them very quickly. If I have hundreds of friends, think what I will learn. Each day they'll teach me something new and show me a new way of thinking about something.
I have a lot to learn in life, so I want as many people as possible to help me. I want a lot of friends to show me how to have a good time. I'll do the same for them.

Adapted from . Dionne Jr. “A Call for National Service” 2013 by The Washington Post. Originally published July 3rd, 2013
And here is the sentence we often forget: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor.”
This, the very last sentence of the document, is what makes the better-remembered sent ence possible. One speaks of our rights. The other addresses our obligations. The freedoms we cherish are self-evident but not self-executing. The Founders pledge something “to each other,” the commonly overlooked clause in the Declaration’s final pronoun cement.
We find ourselves; 237 years after the Founders declared us a new nation, in a season of discontent, even surliness, about the experiment they launched. We are sharply divided over the very meaning of our founding documents, and we are more likely to invoke the word “we” in the context of “us versus them” than in the more capacious sense that includes every single American.
There are no quick fixes to our sense of disconnection, but there may be a way to restre our sense of what we owe each other across the lines of class, race, background — and, yes, politics and ideology.
Last week, the Aspen Institute gathered a politically diverse group of Americans under the banner of the “Franklin Project,” named after Ben, to declare a commitment to offering every American between the ages of 18 and 28 a chance to give a year of serviceto the country. The opportunities would include service in our armed forces but also time spent educating our fellow citizens, bringing them health care and preventive services, working with the least advantaged among us, and conserving our environment.
Service would not be compulsory, but it would be an expectation. And it just might become part of who we are.
The call for universal, voluntary service is being championed by retired . Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, in league with two of the country’s foremost advocates of the cause, John Bridgeland, who served in the George W. Bush administration, and Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year, one of the nation’s most formidable volunteer trio testifies to the non-ideological and nonpartisan nature of this cause, as did a column last week endorsing the idea from Michael Gerson, my conservative Post colleague.
“We’ve a remarkable opportunity now,” McChrystal says, “to move with the American people away from an easy citizenship that does not ask something from every American yet asks a lot from a tiny few.” We do, indeed, owe something to our country, andwe owe an enormous debt to those who have done tour after tour in Iraq and Afghanistan.
McChrystal sees universal service as transformative. “It will change how we think
about America and how we think about ourselves,” he says. And as a former leader of an all-volunteer Army, he scoffs at the idea that giving young Americans a stipend while they serve amounts to “paid volunteerism,” the phrase typically invoked by critics of service programs. “If you try to rely on unpaid volunteerism,” he said, “then you limit the people who can do it. . . .I’d like the people from Scarsdale to be paid the same as the people from East .”
There are real challenges here. Creating the estimated 1 million service slots required to make the prospect of service truly universal will take money, from government and private philanthropy. Service, as McChrystal says, cannot just be a nice thing that well-off kids do when they get out of college. It has to draw in the least advantaged young Americans. In the process, it could open new avenues for social mobility, some thing the military has done for so many in the past.
Who knows whether the universal expectation of service would change the country as much as Mc Chrystal hopes. But we have precious few institutions reminding us to join the Founders in pledging something to each other. We could begin by debating this proposal in a way that frees us from the poisonous assumption that even an idea involving service to others must be part of some hidden political agenda. The agenda here is entirely open. It’s based on the belief that certain unalienable rights entail
certain unavoidable responsibilities.

The reading puts forward three reasons to illustrate the bad effects brought by those prairie dogs. However, the professor refutes these three strongly.
Firstly, the listening argues that the reason why the report had no photo but only draft drawings lied in two aspects. First, the photography technology at that time was not as advanced as it is now. As the imaging techniques was not good, the quality of the photos was low. In addition, when the experiment was conducted, it was cloudy; in such condition to capture the image of a flying plane was too difficult.
Secondly, the reading claims the design of Whitehead’s plane that only had one wing was not logical, for the plane usually had two or three wings at that time. However, the professor disagrees. In the recent, some researchers have made a copy of Whitehead’s plane based on his design diagram. They tested the copy planes four times, and each of them was successful.
Finally, the reading suggests that Whitehead had produced many engines and sold them to several aircraft builders, but in fact none of those engines used in planes had ever succeeded, illustrating that Whitehead had not successfully tested his plane. But the professor argues the problem that those engines did not work could not be blamed to Whitehead. It was because the technology was not so developed at that time and aircraft builders knew little about designing planes. The fact that there were people buying Whitehead’s engines actually proved that his design had no problem.

With the modernization of the world, people’s standard of living has improved a lot. Then there appears a state of sub-health among people which poses a new threat to them.
There are some typical symptoms for people who are in a state of sub-health. First of all, those who suffer from it often have a headache or backache. Secondly, they feel like having a rest frequently. What upsets us most is that, the situation is spreading countrywide. As a result, more and more workers in big cities are harassed by it, with a percentage of 75 in Beijing, 72 in Shanghai and 70 in Guangzhou respectively.
Then how can we solve this problem effectively? Experts suggest that the best way to keep ourselves healthy is to do exercises. It is also very important that people should form a good living habit, for example, getting up early and going to sleep early. Only doing so can we keep us healthy.

When it comes to the issue about which approach should be recommended to people who are interested in other countries, some people may argue that traveling may be an optimal choice, but others believe that TV and the internet could be a substitution of traveling.
On one hand, there is a necessity of traveling to other countries because visitors could touch other cultures to a deeper degree. When a visitor comes to a country, s/he may make acquaintance with local residents and enjoy local food. For example, a visitor could really enjoy Sangria, a famous wine mixed with fruits, in Spain, but not just stare at a picture of Sangria on books and imagine its taste. Then, such experience enables a visitor to really know what a country is with more details.
On the other hand, TV and the Internet provide the public with an alternative way to learn a country. It is common that there exist a lot of forums on the Internet where a lot of visitors may share their unique experience of trips generously. Then, users could conveniently search for any information they need concerning about any specific country on such forums. Similarly, TV programs could provide viewers with information collected by editors that could also prove to be true and trustful under most conditions.
From my own perspective, these two approaches do not necessarily contradict each other, but just fit various groups of people. For visitors who have sufficient time, energy, and budgets, having a tour to some countries may be recommended to them since they could have a better understanding of alien cultures. However, for people who are occupied with their heavy work or have financial burden, traveling may not be accessible for them and thereby watching TV programs and scanning the Internet may be a better option for them.

Competition has definite benefits. It encourages people and organizations to try harder and dotheir best. That is why American society is largely organized around competitive battles. But abalance is needed. When there is too much competition, everybody loses.
Take business as an example. When companies try to win at all costs, people often fighting for sur- vival may lower their prices, which is good for customers.
But companies locked in competition also fire workers, which can hurt thousands of managers feel driven to use unfair tactics, as when companies exploit employees byfailing to pay overtime wages. Competition that is out of control can hurt average Americans.
Politics is another field where competition has gotten out of hand. At one time, competition inpolitics took place only 14 during elections. Now it is constant. Politicians call one anothernames, accuse one another of crimes, and run ads attacking each other. The high cost ofcampaign ads makes it hard for candidates who aren’ t rich to be elected. No wonder manyAmericans say they have come to hate politics.
Now competition has even come to the T V screen. Today’s most popular shows are “reality”shows where people lie, cheat, and hurt each other. What kind of lesson about life does thissend to young kids who may be watching?
We will never do away with all competition and we should not try to. But too much of a goodthing can be bad, and this is true of competition.

Contrary to opinion in the reading, the listening thinks the ads about medicines play a positive role in people’s life.
First, the reading holds that TV ads are not objective, for they often conceal the negative side effects, which even they have not realized yet. However, the listening points out that the consumers have their own objective views and judgments. They often do a lot of researches in the Internet or consult doctors before they buy the products, which enable them to have a comprehensive and thorough understandings of the medicines.
Second, the reading believes that once the medicine is advertised, the sales will surge, which will mislead the consumers to believe that such medicine is very effective, so they will not consult their doctors. This is very hazardous for their health. On the contrary, the listening the big sales of the products will inform the consumers some really useful medicines, which they did not know before. For example, a medicine used for prohibiting the habit of smoking was introduced to the consumers by ads, and it is proved very effective.
Third, the reading suggests that the regulations and controls that government imposed on medicine ads are insufficient, for the government does not censor those ads one by one, which give advertisers loopholes to exploit. However, the listening refutes that though the censorship is not conducted by one ad by ad, the government will seriously fine the companies that violate the regulations, so the companies are less likely to do that.

“Courtesy is rapidly disappearing from everyday interactions, and as a result, we are all the poorer for it.”
From your perspective, is this an accurate observation? Why or why not? Explain, using reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
The speaker claims that simple courtesy and good manners are disappearing from modern life, and that the quality of our lives is therefore deteriorating. While I do encounter frequent instances of discourtesy and bad manners, I also encounter many instances of the opposite behavior. For this reason, and because negative experiences tend to be more memorable and newsworthy (adj. 有报导价值的), I find the speaker’s claim to be dubious.
Most people encounter multiple instances of ordinary courtesy and good manners every day—simple acts such as smokers asking whether anyone minds if they light up, people letting others with fewer items ahead in grocery-store lines, and freeway drivers switching lanes to accommodate faster drivers or those entering via on-ramps. Admittedly, most people also encounter discourtesy or poor manners on a daily basis—people using obscene language in public places where young children are present, and business associates intentionally ignoring phone calls, to name a few. However, such acts do not prove that good manners and courtesy are disappearing; they simply show that both courtesy and discourtesy abound in everyday life. Thus the claim that courtesy and good manners are disappearing grossly (adv.
Another reason that the claim is suspect is that we tend to remember negative encounters with people more so than positive ones, probably because bad experiences tend to be more traumatic and sensational, if not more interesting to talk about. The news stories that the media chooses to focus on certainly support this rationale. However the fact that we remember, hear about, and read about discourtesy more than about courtesy shows neither that discourtesy is increasing nor that courtesy is decreasing. It simply shows that negative experiences leave stronger impressions and tend to be more sensational. In fact, I suspect that if one were to tally up (vt.总结,加一) one’s daily encounters with both types of behavior, one would conclude that good manners and courtesy are far more prevalent than the opposite behavior.
In conclusion, the speaker’s claim that common courtesy and good manners are disappearing is not born out by everyday experience. I suspect the speaker has failed to consider that negative experiences leave stronger impressions on our memory and are more interesting to relate (讲;叙述) to others than positive ones.

As is known to all, writing is an important andnecessary skill for all students. However, many students don’t reallyunderstand the true importance of writing, as they just consider writing as atask of exam. As far as I am concerned, writing has deeper importance in manyways.
Firstly, improving our ability of using words is abasic function of writing. For example, in order to write a good Englishcomposition, we must use every word carefully as much as possible to ensure itscorrectness. In the process, we have improved our ability of using words andwriting skills imperceptibly. In this aspect, writing is a good way tostrengthen our ability.
Moreover, writing is an effective way to enlarge ourvocabulary. Different compositions we write need different , the more compositions we write, the more vocabularies we get. At thesame time, it is helpful to enlarge our reading.
And last but not the least, writing makes greatcontribution to our logical thinking and analysis ability. For one thing, towrite a good composition, we must collect and arrange writing materialssystematically so that we can show off what is essential and what is not soimportant. In the process of dealing with materials, we are also learning toanalyze and deal with the different problems. For another, it is also a processto practice our own thinking ability and form different thoughts. By dealing withall kinds of compositions, we can get in touch with more thoughts and becomewiser.
In a word, writing is an important skill, especiallyfor language learners. Thus, we should improve our writing ability as much aspossible to improve our overall levels.
